Spring Floral Colour Palette & Cupcake Design

May 18, 2020 by kelseylacombe

Spring Floral Colour Palette & Cupcake Design – a beautiful spring colour palette featuring magenta, soft pink, sunny yellow, leafy green and bright white.

I don’t know about you, but I find inspiration for decorating all around me! The other day, I was out for a walk and came across a front yard that was full of beautiful tulips. The pretty combination of colours really caught my eye and I knew I had to recreate this colour palette on some cupcakes.

As for the design, I love creating cupcakes that are full of texture. This seems to be quite a popular trend right now with cupcakes. I think the first time I saw this kind of design was on Milk and Water Baking Co’s Instagram a few years ago. Creating a textured cupcake or cake is such a simple way to achieve a beautiful design and with the right piping tips and a little practice, it’s really not that hard.

What you will need

For the most part, I use the Wilton Colour Right System and Americolor gels for food colouring. You can pretty much achieve any colour by mixing the main 7 colours that come in Wilton’s kit and Americolor just has an amazing variety of beautiful colours. As far as piping tips go, I mainly use Wilton.

For this colour palette I used:

Wilton Colour Right System – Yellow, Blue, Black, Pink, Orange, Brown

Wilton – White White (you do not need this, it just makes your buttercream a brighter white than it’s natural colour)

Americolor – Fuchsia

For this design I used:

Wilton Cakes Piping Tips: 1M, two 2D, 199, 352 – Note that tips 199 and 352 require couplers.

3 cups of Vanilla Buttercream – I suggest my Perfect Vanilla Buttercream

12-18 cupcakes

5 piping bags. My favourite type are these ones by Wilton.

How to make this Spring Floral Colour Palette & Cupcake Design

Colour Palette

The first thing we are going to do is divide up our Buttercream. You will need 5 small bowls. I use my everyday soup/cereal bowls.

Divide your buttercream evenly into 4 of the bowls. Each bowl should have about 3/4 cup of buttercream. Now take one of those bowls and divide it in half. Put that half into the 5th bowl.

Your 3 bowls with more buttercream will be for the magenta, soft pink and yellow. The 2 bowls with less buttercream will be for the leafy green and white.

Here is the Colour Formula. Add the required amount of drops of food colour into each bowl and stir until fully mixed.

Magenta – 3 drops of Americolor Fuchsia

Yellow – 5 drops of yellow, 1 drop orange

Soft Pink – 1 drop pink, 1 drop brown

Leafy Green – 4 drops yellow, 1 drop blue, 1 drop black

White – 2 drops bright white

Cupcake Design

Once all of your colours are mixed, let’s put them into the piping bags. Fit each piping bag with the 5 piping tips listed above and fill each with the colour of buttercream listed below.

1M tip – Magenta

2D tip – Yellow

2D tip – Soft Pink

199 tip – White

352 tip – Leafy Green

Step 1: Pipe a rosette with Magenta/1M in the top left corner of your cupcake.

Step 2: Pipe another rosette with Soft Pink/2D in the bottom right corner of your cupcake.

Step 3: Pipe two drop flowers with Yellow/2D on either side of your rosettes.

Step 4: Pipe 3 dollops using White/199 in the blank spaces around your rosettes and drop flowers.

Step 5: Pipe two leaves using Leafy Green/352 on the outer edges of the rosettes.

There you have it! A pretty spring floral cupcake! Feel free to mix up your rosettes and drop flowers as the 1M and 2D tips can be used for both. You can also add more leaves or fill in more space with the 199 dollops if you want!
